CIA, FBI Edited Wikipedia Entries On Iraq, Guantanamo
People using CIA and FBI computers have edited entries in the online encyclopedia Wikipedia on topics including the Iraq war and the Guantanamo prison, according to a new tracing program.
The changes may violate Wikipedia's conflict-of-interest guidelines, a spokeswoman for the site said on Thursday.
The program, WikiScanner, was developed by Virgil Griffith of the Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico and posted this month on a Web site that was quickly overwhelmed with searches.
The program allows users to track the source of computers used to make changes to the popular Internet encyclopedia where anyone can submit and edit entries.
WikiScanner revealed that CIA computers were used to edit an entry on the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. A graphic on casualties was edited to add that many figures were estimated and were not broken down by class.
Another entry on former CIA chief William Colby was edited by CIA computers to expand his career history and discuss the merits of a Vietnam War rural pacification program that he headed.
Aerial and satellite images of the U.S. prison for terrorism suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, were removed using a computer traced to the FBI, WikiScanner showed.
CIA spokesman George Little said he could not confirm whether CIA computers were used in the changes, adding that "the agency always expects its computer systems to be used responsibly."
The FBI did not have an immediate response.
Computers at numerous other organizations and companies were found to have been involved in editing articles related to them.
Griffith said he developed WikiScanner "to create minor public relations disasters for companies and organizations I dislike (and) to see what 'interesting organizations' (which I am neutral towards) are up to."
It was not known whether changes were made by an official representative of an agency or company, Griffith said, but it was certain the change was made by someone with access to the organization's network.
It violates Wikipedia's neutrality guidelines for a person with close ties to an issue to contribute to an entry about it, said spokeswoman Sandy Ordonez of the Wikimedia Foundation, Wikipedia's parent organization.
However, she said, "Wikipedia is self-correcting," meaning misleading entries can be quickly revised by another editor. She said Wikimedia welcomed the WikiScanner.

Fred Hampton became active in the NAACP when he was attending Triton Junior college in the suburbs outside of Chicago. He became the leader of the Youth Council of the NAACP's West Suburban Branch. He made it his mission to improve the conditions of his people, working to uptain better and more facilities in the neighborhoods. At the time he adopted a philosophy of
social change through non violent activism and community orgainzing.
In November of 1968, Hampton joined the BPP at the age of 19 and relocated downtown Chicago, launching the Illinois Chapter. One of his major achievemnts was the brokering of a non aggression pact among the Chicago street gangs, emphasizing that racial and ethnic conflict between gangs would only keep its members stuck in poverty. He was then able to form a class consious, multi racial alliance of black, latino, and poor white youth. Both Fred Hampton and Mark Clark were instrumental in forming a program that provided a free breakfast for school children. Fred also helped in the establishment of a free medical clinic as well as other free services for poor people in the city.
What made Hampton a target was his incredible speaking ability, leadership skills, and charisma. He held many speaking engagements and had the ability to excite and motivate others. By the age of 20 he had became the respected community leader among the Chicago black population. As Hampton progressed and learned he became more militant in his views. The Sun times quoted him as saying, "What this country has done to non violent leaders like Martin Luther King, I think it objectively says thers going to have to be an armed struggle." In 1969 he was arrested for the strong arm theft of $71 worth of Good Humor bars that he said that he contributed to neighborhood children. Initailly he was convicted to 2-5 years in prison but it was overturned. He left the event with a stronger distrust of the American legal system.
The F.B.I.'s cross dressing alleged homo sexual director J.Edgar Hoover was very threatened by the black panther party or any other kind of movement that went against the establishment order (New World Order). Hoover was determined to prevent the formation of a cohesive black radical movement in the U.S. The F.B.I. began keeping tabs on Hamtpon's acitivities.
The F.B.I. urged the CPD (Chicago Police Dptmnt) to launch an all out assault on the panthers and their allies. Over 100 Panthers were arrested during the year of 1969 alone. All this fell under the much larger and far reaching COINTELPRO operations conducted by the F.B.I. to combat dessent within by the U.S. By the time of his death, The F.B.I. had compiled over 4000 pages of information on Fred Hampton. In 1968, Hoover described the Panthers as "The greatest threat to the internal security of the country."
The COINTELPRO operations included numerous illegal, unconstitutional, and highly immoral actions targeted against American citizens who challenged the social political order. These tactics were used to discredit, disrupt, and as we've just seen, to silent dissent.
The lives of Fred hampton and Mark Clark serves as a reminder of the sacrifice that is necessary for a better tomorrow. This is also a prime example of the fact that cops are not the heroes, regardless of what the media wants us to believe. Cops can only follow orders while heroes lead. In America trying to obtain a better standard of living for your people is
cause for violent reprisal. Where is the justice in that? The civil rights movement hasn't changed anything in this country. Martin Luther had a dream, but it didnt come true. The views of King are legitimized and every February America remembers his legacy. But where's Fred, Mark,

In his first interview with George Noory, retired airline pilot John Lear spoke on a variety of topics which included his experiences as a pilot, NASA's secret space missions, and life on other planets. A fourth astronaut died in the Apollo 1 fire of 1967 but the reason it wasn't made public was because he belonged to the "secret astronaut corps," Lear claimed, based on information he received from a "true insider" (now deceased). This secret program actually started going to the moon in 1962 and landed on Mars in 1966, apparently using covert antigravity technology, he continued. Publicized space missions such as the Shuttle are actually a cover-up for what is really going on, added Lear. Also kept from the public, is the fact that there is life similar to ours on most of the planets in our solar system, he declared. Researchers Develop Quantum Processor
"This type of integrated chip structure is significant because it demonstrates a way to scale the quantum computer to bigger systems," said Christopher Monroe, a physics professor. "It has applications for processing very large [data sets] such as in cryptography, for example, and there is a lot of interest in this by the government."
A computer chip based on the esoteric science of quantum mechanics has been created by researchers at the University of Michigan. The chip might well pave the way for a new generation of supercomputers.
Employing the same semiconductor-fabrication techniques used to create common computer chips, the Michigan team was able to trap a single atom within an integrated chip and control it using electrical signals.
Two Places at Once
As of yet, the technology is not applicable to typical desktop PCs or servers, but quantum computers are said to be promising because they can solve complicated problems using massively parallel computing.
That is accomplished by the quirky nature of quantum mechanics, said Christopher Monroe, a physics professor and the principal investigator and co-author of the paper "Ion Trap in a Semiconductor Chip." He explained that that chips can process multiple inputs at the same time in the same device.
"With quantum mechanics, an object can be in two places at the same time, as long as you don't look at it," he said. The quantum computer architecture can store quantum bits (qubits) of information, where each qubit can hold the numbers one or zero, or even both digits simultaneously.
When a qubit is added to a quantum system, the computing power doubles. Thus, the quantum machine can crunch numbers at a rate that is exponentially faster than conventional processors, said Monroe.
New Spin on Semiconductors
Electrically charged atoms (ions) for such quantum computers are stored in traps in order to isolate the qubits, a process that is essential for the system to work.
The challenge is that current ion traps can hold only a few atoms, or qubits, and are not easily scaled, making it difficult to create a quantum chip that can store thousands or more atomic ions. A string of such atoms, in theory, could store thousands of bits of information.
In the chip created at Michigan, which is the size of a postage stamp, the ion is confined in a trap while electric fields are applied. Laser light puts a spin on the ion's free electron, enabling it to flip it between the one or zero quantum states.
The spin of the electron dictates the value of the qubit. For example, an up-spin can represent a one, or a down-spin can represent a zero -- or the qubit can occupy both states simultaneously.
Applications for Cryptography
The quantum processor is made of gallium arsenide in a layered structure and etched with electrodes using the same type of lithography process as those used to create today's computer chips. Each electrode is connected to a separate voltage supply, and these various electrical voltages control the ion by moving as it hovers in a space carved out of the chip.
The next step is to build a bigger chip with many more electrodes, so that it can store more ions. There still is a lot of work to be done to learn how to control lots of ions in one of these chips. It won't be nearly as easy as it was with conventional computer chips, but at least we know what to do in principle, Monroe said.
